What Is a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)?
A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, commonly found in outlets and breakers, is designed to protect people from electrical shock.
In a properly functioning circuit, electricity flows out on the “hot” wire to power an appliance and returns via the “neutral” wire. Ideally, the current leaving and the current returning should be exactly the same. A ground fault, then, occurs when electricity escapes this intended path and finds a shortcut to the ground. Unfortunately, if you are holding a defective appliance or standing in a puddle of water while touching a switch, you might become that shortcut.
GFCI devices work by constantly monitoring the electrical current flowing in and out of a circuit. If the device senses even a tiny imbalance (as little as 4 to 6 milliamps), it will shut off power almost instantly, often in less than one-tenth of a second. This rapid response helps prevent severe shocks, electrocution, and even fires.

- Nails or screws driven into hidden wires
- Aging outlets or switches
- Overheated or malfunctioning appliances
Standard circuit breakers are generally not sophisticated enough to detect these dangerous arcs. A standard breaker looks for a sustained overload or a massive short circuit. An electrical arc, however, can be intermittent and erratic. It might sizzle and pop without drawing enough current to trip a standard breaker, all the while generating enough heat to start a fire.
AFCI devices fill the gap. They contain advanced electronic logic that monitors the circuit for the specific waveform of a dangerous electrical arc. When it detects this pattern, it de-energizes the circuit before the heat can build up enough to cause a fire.
